KING LEAR Go you before to Gloucester with these letters.
Acquaint my daughter no further with any thing you know than comes from her demand out of the letter. If your diligence be not speedy, I shall be there afore you.5 |
リア王 この手紙を持って先にグロスターへ行ってくれ。
手紙の内容の質問以外は、 知っていても、娘には一切喋るな。 おまえがもたもたしていると、わしが先に着いてしまうぞ。 |
KENT
I will not sleep, my lord, till I have delivered
your letter.

道化 もし脳みそが踵まで下がって、おつむが軽くなれば、脳みそがあかぎれになる心配はありませんか。

Fool
Then, I prithee, be merry; thy wit shall ne'er go
slip-shod.

道化 それじゃ、安心しな。あんたの脳みそならスリッパは要らないな。

リア王 ハッ、ハッ、ハッ。

Fool
Shalt see thy other daughter will use thee kindly;
for though she's as like this as a crab's like an15
apple, yet I can tell what I can tell.

道化 あちらの娘ならお前を相応に迎えてくれるだろう。なぜといって、あちらの娘もこちらの娘も似ているようだけど、野生のりんごと畑のりんごくらいの違いはある。わたしは秘密を知っているのだ。

KING LEAR
Why, what canst thou tell, my boy?

リア王 おい、何を知っておるのだ。

Fool
She will taste as like this as a crab does to a
crab. Thou canst tell why one's nose stands i'

道化 あちらの娘もこちらの娘と変わりはないということさ、野生のりんごはどのりんごも同じ酸っぱい味がするもの。ところで鼻はなぜ顔の真ん中にあるか、知ってるか。

リア王 いや、知らないな。

Fool
Why, to keep one's eyes of either side's nose; that
what a man cannot smell out, he may spy into.

道化 鼻の両側を見張っているためさ。臭いをかげなかったら、探り出さなけりゃならんだろう。

KING LEAR

リア王 あれには悪いことをした。

Fool
Canst tell how an oyster makes his shell?

道化 カキはどうやって殻を作るか知ってるか。

KING LEAR

リア王 いや、知らないな。

Nor I neither; but I can tell why a snail has a house.30

道化 わたしも知らないよ。だが、カタツムリにどうして家があるか知ってるぞ。

リア王 どうしてだ。

Fool
Why, to put his head in; not to give it away to his
daughters, and leave his horns without a case.

道化 頭を中に入れとくためさ、誰かさんみたいに、娘に譲ってしまって、自分の角を無防備にしておくためではないよ。

KING LEAR
I will forget my nature. So kind a father! Be my35
horses ready?

リア王 わしは父親の情を忘れよう。娘思いの父親だったが。馬の準備はできたか。

Fool
Thy asses are gone about 'em. The reason why the
seven stars are no more than seven is a pretty reason.

道化 馬鹿どもが今やってるよ。七つ星がなぜ七つなのか、ちゃんと理由があるんだ。

KING LEAR

リア王 八つじゃないからだろう。

Fool
Yes, indeed: thou wouldst make a good fool.

道化 当たりだ。おまえは立派な馬鹿になれるな。

KING LEAR
To take 't again perforce! Monster ingratitude!
|
リア王 力ずくでも取り戻してやる。この恩知らずめ。
|
Fool
If thou wert my fool, nuncle, I'ld have thee beaten45
for being old before thy time.
|
道化 おじさんよ、もしわたしの弟子になったら、早く年を取りすぎたことで、あんたを折檻してやる。

KING LEAR
How's that?

リア王 それはどうしてじゃ。
|
Fool
Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst
been wise.
|
道化 充分な知恵がつくより早く、年をとってはダメだってことさ。
|
KING LEAR
O, let me not be mad, not mad, sweet heaven!50
Keep me in temper: I would not be mad!
Enter Gentleman
How now! are the horses ready?

リア王 おお、恵み深い天よ。わしの気を狂わすな。狂わせるな。わしを正気でいさせろ。わしは狂いたくない。
紳士入場
どうした、馬の準備はできたか。

Gentleman
Ready, my lord.
|
紳士 陛下、準備はできました。
|
KING LEAR
Come, boy.
|
リア王 行こう。
|
Fool She that's a maid now, and laughs at my departure,55
Shall not be a maid long, unless things be cut shorter. |
道化 今、わしの出立を笑っている娘さんよ、
いつまでも生娘（きむすめ）のままじゃおれないぞ、この一物が元気なうちはな。 |
